AI in research: addressing the digital age and digital revolution

Thursday, 22 May 2025, 09:00 – 10:00 h

This debate session will delve into the complex and multifaceted implications of AI’s growing role in research. Providing diverse perspectives on critical issues, this session will feature two medical / research AI data specialists, a Bioengineering Chief Editor from the Nature portfolio, and a leader in the forensic analysis of scientific and biomedical research relevant to issues of potential academic misconduct and false claims concerns.

This debate will explore how AI transforms an idea into a tangible scientific output, from generating ideas and gathering background information to experimental planning, data analysis, predictive modeling, data interpretation, and its role in scientific writing and publishing.

Discussions will include topics such as the integrity of AI-generated content, the potential need for new reporting standards if research papers use AI generated data and the challenges posed by non-standardized reporting, and possible propagation of biases, errors, and inconsistencies in AI outputs. We will also delve into the question of whether AI could be considered as an author on a paper, examining what this might mean for authorship, accountability, and the future of AI in scholarly publishing. This debate promises to be a thought-provoking discussion on the opportunities and challenges that AI presents in the rapidly evolving landscape of research.
